I am thrilled to introduce Mathi, the owner of Thodiaaram, to you today as part of my Mother’s Day series. Read on to find out why you are never too old to pursue your dreams- age is just a number!
“I was born in Chennai, India in a conservative middle class family and got married at a young age of 21. I spent most of my life like a typical South Indian housewife; taking care of my husband and my two beautiful girls. I was not unhappy about it, in fact my girls have a special respect for all the care and support I provided them. I have always had an interest in art and craft and am usually seen working on various craft projects. My dad treasured my creations and proudly showed them off to his friends. On my 50th birthday I felt an emptiness in my life that I hadn’t achieved anything for myself. At the same time I was looking into making silk thread earrings and made a few for my daughters. We struck the idea of opening a shop on Etsy. Exactly a month after my 50th birthday, I launched my shop ‘Thodiaaram’ on Etsy and within a week I started receiving orders.
Today I can see that my shop has generated a higher number of sales when compared with similar businesses. I believe that it is because of my dedication and my attention to detail when I create my products. Although my friends and family have always praised my creations, I feel a sense of achievement when I see my customers purchasing and reviewing my products.
It is very important for women at any age to find their interest and use their full potential to succeed. To all the young women out there, if I can start my own business at age 50, you can too. You have your whole life to achieve anything you put your hard work into. So don’t wait, start working today!“
Mathi’s favourite inspiration quote (one of my favourite quotes as well) is, “Someone once told me the definition of hell: The last day you have on earth, the person you became will meet the person you could have become. – Anonymous”.
